Another Las Vegas road trip

Another road trip to Las Vegas gets underway in just a few hours. We’re going to try some new places to eat this weekend, and we’ll return to some old favorites too. As always, you’ll find updates and maybe even a few photos here.

Bucket list

For what it’s worth, I’d be okay not to see another bucket list ever. It’s probably the most tired, overused travel blogging meme out there. I mean, how many 20-somethings are really expecting to die soon enough to need a bucket list?

Memorial Day travels

If you’re taking to the road on this long weekend, please stay safe. Check your tire pressure and keep one or two gallons of drinking water in your car, especially here in the hot, arid Southwest. Summer weather is here, and I’ve noticed a lot of shredded tires on the freeways the past few weeks.

This coming Monday is Memorial Day in the United States and, if I’m not mistaken, a bank holiday in a number of other countries. Due to prior commitments, Kathryn and I are spending the holiday weekend close to home. Continue reading “Memorial Day travels”

Another beautiful morning in Phoenix

I managed to get out of bed this morning in time for an early hike before work. It’s one of those few beautiful weeks we see every spring in Phoenix. The sun is up early enough to start a hike at 5:30 am, but it’s not too hot outside. Today was gorgeous. There was no discernible wind, and yet the air was clear. The brown cloud that normally covers the city during the week was nowhere to be seen.

Another beautiful morning

It’s another beautiful morning for a hike in Phoenix. After two days hiking the Loop at Shaw Butte, though, I think I’m ready for a break. My knees are a bit wobbly today.

Apologies for the long delay

I want to express my apologies for the long delay in producing posts about our trip to Pennsylvania and Rome.

I want to express my apologies for the long delay in producing posts about our trip to Pennsylvania and Rome. It seems like there haven’t been enough hours in the day for me recently. I’ve prepared several pages of notes on paper, and I’ll try to get everything online before the rest of my memory fades. Thanks for your continued patience.

Eventful start

Our adventure has started rather eventfully. We took off from Phoenix this morning right on schedule, and now we’re safely back on the ground … in Phoenix. The aircraft had a mechanical problem shortly after takeoff, and we had to return to land, but only after circling for almost an hour to burn fuel. We’re not sure what happens next.

Last-minute solo getaway to Las Vegas

I made a last-minute executive decision this morning to do an overnight trip to Vegas. I got in the car at 8:10, and thanks to the miracle of time zones, I was at my hotel at 12:20. I’m going to see how much trouble I can get into by myself in less than 28 hours. I’ve already wandered off the Strip, and I’m settling into my second beer.

Another quick update from Ireland

I’m sure someone I know is waking up this morning, turning on CNN, and hearing about violence in Northern Ireland. I didn’t hear about it until an hour or so ago myself, so it hasn’t affected me, other than increased traffic. Police with machine guns were checking cars on the bridge in Derry, and I didn’t know why until later.

In any event, I’m now back in the Republic of Ireland, where I had already planned to spend my time before heading back to the chaos in London.

Punchline on the beer

A half-liter of Amstel in the hotel bar is 900 forint, which is a little more than $4. And the hotel tacks on a ten percent service charge. The half-liter beer I’m drinking now is 300 forint, with no service charge. You do the math. I’m about 100 feet from the hotel door. I wish I knew about this place two days ago.

Border crossing, en route to Warsaw, Poland

Another border crossing, and two more stamps in my passport. I’m now in Poland, bound for Warsaw. I actually bought a ticket for Krakow, but since there is a connection in Warsaw, and since the second ticket is full-fare, I thought I might stick around Warsaw for a night or two and continue the journey later.

Berlin

I’m in Berlin for the night. I’ve been here before, so I’m not really visiting, but I got a great rail fare from Copenhagen to here. I plan to hole up for the night, watch a little CNN, and continue east in the morning. I found a reasonably cheap hotel room in a quiet part of the city, and I’m ready to chill.

Shout out

I wanna give a shout-out to my family. They’re keeping an eye on my place while I’m away and e-mailing me updates from home. They’re also taking care of some small chores for me, and it’s making my trip a lot easier. Thanks, y’all! Peace out.

Sunburn

It’s hard to believe I would have a sunburn after spending three days in a place called Iceland, especially after all the rain I’ve told you about, but I managed to burn my face a bit while I was at the Blue Lagoon today.

However, the burn is hardly noticeable, because I haven’t shaven since I left Phoenix.

Safe and well

In the middle of Þingvellir National Park in Iceland, and I suddenly have an Internet connection again. I thought I’d pop my head up before I get back to Reykjavik and it doesn’t work again. I’m safe and well. More to follow when able.
